New Delhi: A disturbing incident of assault on two women unfolded in southeast Delhi's Nehru Place on Sunday morning, prompting police action. According to officials, a group of men allegedly attacked the women, leading to the detention of two suspects while at least two others remain at large.
Victim's Account and Police Response
One of the victims, a woman from Assam, later released a video claiming that police initially refused to register a First Information Report (FIR). She stated, 'We contacted the special police unit for the northeastern region, after which action was taken.' Police, however, deny any delay and assert that an FIR was registered immediately.
According to police, a PCR call was received around 7 a.m. from a tea point near a hotel, and a team promptly reached the spot. The women reported being subjected to derogatory remarks and abuses, which allegedly escalated into a physical altercation.
Medical Examination and Investigation
'Both survivors were taken for medical examination, and an investigation was taken up,' a senior officer said. Police have denied allegations of racist remarks being made during the incident.
The woman from Assam told police that she had gone to have tea with a friend from Bihar. While buying a water bottle, two men on a bike passed lewd comments. After a quarrel, the accused returned with more men in a car and physically assaulted and molested them. Their clothes were torn in the melee, her statement added.
Identification and Arrests
The senior officer elaborated, 'CCTV footage from the vicinity was checked, and many witnesses, including passersby, were identified. Multiple raids were conducted, eight people were rounded up and questioned. Finally, four main accused were identified.'
Police have registered an FIR under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 74 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 126 (wrongful restraint), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kalkaji police station.
Authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects and urge anyone with information to come forward.
