Uday Chari Withdraws Petition on CCP Elections in High Court
In a significant development in Panaji, Uday Chari, who had filed his nomination for the upcoming Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections, withdrew his petition from the high court on Monday. Chari had sought a directive for the CCP elections to be conducted based on the electoral rolls that were finalized by the Election Commission of India last month, following the SIR (Special Investigation Report) process.

Advocate General Devidas Pangam, representing the state, provided insights after the hearing. He stated that the petition was filed at a belated stage, just on the eve of the elections. The core argument presented by Chari was that the elections should proceed using the newly notified electoral roll, rather than the one that was established prior to the election announcement.
Pangam emphasized, "We pointed out to the high court that this petition was frivolous and filed at a belated stage. We also highlighted that the cut-off date fixed by the state election commission served as the foundation for finalizing the electoral rolls. Notably, no one, including Chari himself, had challenged this cut-off date throughout the entire period until now."
Imminent Dismissal and Withdrawal
The high court was on the verge of dismissing Chari's petition due to its timing and perceived lack of merit. Pangam revealed that the court explicitly asked Chari's legal representative whether he would voluntarily withdraw the petition. The alternative was a dismissal with costs, which could have imposed financial penalties on Chari.
"The court was about to dismiss his petition. But it inquired with the lawyer if Chari would withdraw the petition; otherwise, it would be dismissed with costs," Pangam explained. This ultimatum led to Chari's decision to withdraw, avoiding potential legal repercussions.
