In a shocking incident of familial betrayal, police in Ujjain have arrested a man for brutally assaulting his own 65-year-old sister and robbing her of a significant sum of money. The crime, which took place in the Heeramil area, has sent ripples through the local community.
Masked Assault in Heeramil ki Chaal
The disturbing event unfolded on Monday afternoon in the Heeramil ki Chaal locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Dewas Gate police station. According to the police complaint, a masked individual attacked the elderly woman, identified as Sampatbai, as she was walking alone. The assailant assaulted her and fled with Rs 50,000 that she was carrying. The injured senior citizen was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.
CCTV Footage Reveals Shocking Identity
Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police launched an investigation and began scanning CCTV cameras installed in the Heeramil area. The footage revealed a suspect whose movements and appearance raised suspicions. To the investigators' astonishment, the person seen in the videos was identified as the victim's own brother. Based on this crucial evidence, the police took Devilal Damami into custody for questioning.
During interrogation, the truth came to light. Devilal confessed to robbing his sister. Dewas Gate TI Anila Parashar confirmed that Devilal was formally arrested and that the entire stolen amount of Rs 50,000 was recovered from a cupboard in his house located in Mangal Nagar.
Financial Crisis Leads to Family Betrayal
The police provided further details on the motive and sequence of events. Earlier on Monday, Sampatbai had visited the State Bank of India branch in the Chimanganj area and withdrawn a total of Rs 4 lakh for house repair work. Her brother, Devilal, had accompanied her to the bank.
Seeing the large amount of cash, Devilal, who was reportedly going through a financial crisis, began plotting the robbery. However, Sampatbai's account to the police added another layer. She stated that after withdrawing the money, she had given Rs 3.50 lakh to Devilal, who took it home for safekeeping. She kept the remaining Rs 50,000 with her as she needed to go to the market. It was while she was walking alone with this money that she was attacked by the masked man, who turned out to be her brother.
The case highlights a tragic breach of trust within a family, where personal financial desperation led to a violent crime against a vulnerable elderly relative. The police have successfully solved the case, ensuring the victim's money was returned and the accused faces legal action.
