UK YouTuber Stranded at Mumbai Airport as Police LOC Remains Active
UK YouTuber Stranded at Mumbai Airport Over Police LOC

British YouTuber Sangram Patil found himself stranded at Mumbai International Airport on Monday morning. Immigration authorities stopped him from boarding his flight back to the United Kingdom. They cited an active lookout circular issued against his name by Mumbai police.

LOC Remains Active Despite Withdrawal Process

Patil expressed frustration over the situation. He claimed Mumbai police had initiated the process to withdraw the lookout circular after January 10th. Officers had taken his signatures and passport photograph for this purpose. Despite this procedural start, the circular remained active when he attempted to depart on January 19th.

"I gave my statement and requested the police to cancel the lookout circular," Patil told a news agency. "The inquiry was complete, and I was scheduled to return. Despite informing them of my travel date, the circular has not been withdrawn."

Background of the Defamation Case

This incident connects to earlier legal troubles for Patil. Mumbai police first detained him on January 10th at the city's international airport. The Crime Branch Unit-III questioned him regarding a defamation complaint.

BJP media cell functionary Nikhil Bhamre filed the complaint. It alleged Patil circulated false information about the ruling party. The complaint also accused him of making derogatory comments against party leaders.

Police served Patil a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. This provision allows for issuing an appearance notice instead of making an arrest for offences carrying shorter jail terms.

Police Investigation Continues

A senior crime branch officer provided the police perspective to TOI. "We have amended the LOC from detention to 'prevent and inform' because the investigation is ongoing," the officer stated.

The officer clarified that Patil has not surrendered his mobile phone and laptop for the probe. The investigating officer reportedly asked Patil to postpone his flight. According to the police, Patil was aware of the active lookout circular.

Patil countered this claim. He stated the crime branch called him on January 16th. On that day, he submitted written replies to all police queries.

Impact on Fundamental Rights

The YouTuber highlighted how the situation affects his rights as a British citizen. "My freedom of movement and freedom of expression is curtailed due to these police actions," Patil claimed. He emphasized the personal and professional disruption caused by being unable to leave India.

The case continues to develop as Patil remains in Mumbai. The resolution depends on the Mumbai police completing their investigation and formally withdrawing the lookout circular.
