UP Police Constable Arrested for Aiding Cattle Smugglers in Varanasi

In a significant crackdown on corruption, a suspended police constable from Varanasi has been arrested for allegedly facilitating cattle smuggling operations. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat illegal activities and root out misconduct within law enforcement.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

Police constable Satyendra Yadav, aged 26, was arrested by Chandauli police on Monday. Yadav, who was previously suspended from the Saiyyedraja police station on corruption charges, was taken into custody from the Sammanpur area of Ambedkarnagar district. According to Chandauli SP Akash Patel, the arrest followed an interrogation and analysis of call detail records from a recently apprehended cattle smuggler.

The investigation revealed that Yadav was actively aiding cattle smugglers by providing them with critical updates on police movements. His role involved alerting smugglers about police locations, patrolling routes, and safe passages to cross the Uttar Pradesh border into Bihar. In return for these services, Yadav allegedly received payments through both online and offline methods, as confirmed by SP Patel.

A case has been registered against Yadav under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Saiyyedraja police station. Authorities have emphasized that the drive against cattle smuggling will be intensified, with a focus on detecting any internal collaborators within the police department.

Broader Context of Cattle Smuggling Crackdown

SP Akash Patel provided detailed statistics on the actions taken by Chandauli police against cattle smuggling in 2025. A total of 162 cases were filed against four accused individuals, resulting in the recovery of 1,297 cattle and 90 kg of beef. Additionally, 178 vehicles were seized during these operations.

Of those held, 17 accused were booked under the Goonda Act, and 38 under the Gangster Act. In one notable case, property worth Rs 73,96,820 was seized. So far in the current year, 46 cases have been registered against 127 accused in connection with cattle smuggling, leading to the rescue of 345 cattle and the seizure of 55 vehicles.

The investigation into Yadav's activities has also brought to light the names of his accomplices, indicating a broader network involved in these illegal operations. Authorities have vowed to continue their rigorous efforts to dismantle such smuggling rings and ensure accountability within the police force.

This case underscores the challenges faced in combating organized crime and corruption, particularly in regions bordering states like Bihar. The arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and integrity in law enforcement to protect public safety and uphold the rule of law.
