UP Teacher Drinks Acid Mistaken for Water in Hapur Shop

A young teacher in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, is fighting for her life after mistakenly drinking acid that had been stored in a packaged drinking water bottle. The incident occurred at a jewellery shop in Arjun Nagar, Hapur, on July 11, 2026, and has sparked widespread shock and demands for a thorough investigation.

What Happened at the Jewellery Shop

CCTV footage from the shop, shared on X by the handle @gharkekalesh, shows the teacher, identified as Riya, sitting beside her mother. Her mother hands her a water bottle, which Riya drinks from. Within moments, she rushes out of the shop in visible distress. Her mother and the shopkeeper initially appear confused before following her outside to seek help.

According to the X post, the shop owner had asked a helper to fetch a water bottle from a nearby store. However, the helper allegedly brought back a bottle containing a colourless acidic substance instead of drinking water. After consuming it, Riya complained of a burning sensation in her throat, felt unwell, and collapsed.

Police Response and Custody

Riya was rushed to a medical college, where she remains in critical condition. The shopkeeper who provided the water bottle has been taken into police custody. He reportedly claimed that the bottle was sealed and part of a supply received from the company.

The Hapur Police addressed the incident on their official X handle, stating: "Under the Hapur Nagar police station area, at a jeweller's shop in Arjun Nagar, a young woman asked for water to drink. A bottle of water was requested from a boy near the jeweller, who mistakenly brought a bottle of white-coloured acid instead of a water bottle, which the young woman drank thinking it was water." They added that further legal proceedings are underway.

Internet Reacts

The video has gone viral, drawing widespread concern and outrage. One user commented, "Action should be taken against such a person, whoever is guilty, because someone else is bearing the punishment for their negligence." Another wrote, "The CCTV is disturbing. Wishing her strength and hoping investigators determine exactly what happened."

The incident has raised questions about safety and negligence in handling hazardous substances. Authorities are investigating how the acid came to be stored in a water bottle and whether the shopkeeper's claim about the bottle being sealed is accurate.
