Residents of Podocem village in Sattari taluka were left alarmed after a local man allegedly fired shots to intimidate late-night gatherings in the area. The Valpoi Police Station, with support from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit, conducted a thorough combing operation in the Housing Board locality of Zariwada on Saturday following multiple complaints from concerned villagers.
Police Operation Uncovers Hidden Weapon
The police search initially yielded no suspicious findings at the resident's home. However, the investigation took a significant turn when officers noticed a locked storeroom adjacent to the main living area. When the suspect, identified as Apte, refused to open the storeroom, police personnel were forced to break open the door.
Inside the storage space, officers made a crucial discovery: a blue barrel containing a long bag with a professional air gun fitted with a scope. Police verification confirmed that Apte did not possess a valid license for the weapon, making its possession illegal under Indian arms regulations.
Confession Reveals Motive Behind Gunshots
During interrogation, the accused made a startling admission to authorities. He confessed to firing shots on two separate occasions with the specific intention of scaring away individuals who gathered late at night for drinking alcohol and what he described as "other illegal activities" in the village.
The suspect claimed his actions were motivated by frustration with the late-night gatherings that he believed were disrupting peace in the residential area. However, his method of addressing the issue through illegal gunfire has now landed him in legal trouble.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Valpoi Police have registered a formal case against the accused, who has been served an official notice and instructed to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation until the inquiry is completed. The case highlights growing concerns about individuals taking law enforcement into their own hands rather than relying on proper legal channels.
The seized air gun with scope has been sent for further forensic examination to determine if it was used in any other incidents in the region. Police officials have reassured local residents that they are taking the matter seriously and will maintain heightened vigilance in the area.
