Varanasi Police Crack Down on Temple Scam, Arrest Eight Fake Priests
In a significant crackdown on fraudulent activities at one of India's most revered religious sites, the Chowk police in Varanasi arrested eight individuals on Sunday for allegedly posing as priests and duping devotees at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The accused were apprehended following multiple complaints about illegal darshan services being offered for a fee, which prompted a thorough investigation by the authorities.
Police Action Based on Evidence and Tip-offs
ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi revealed that the police had received numerous complaints regarding the illicit practices at the temple, leading them to gather substantial evidence. Utilizing CCTV footage and acting on a crucial tip-off, the authorities were able to identify and locate the suspects involved in the scam. The arrested individuals include Murlidhar Pandey, Ritesh Pandey, Ram Babu Pandey, Vijay Tiwari, Harsh Pandey, Kaju Pandey, Vinayak Pandey, and Akash Pandey.
Charges and Modus Operandi
The accused have been booked on serious charges, including misbehaving with devotees and extorting money under the guise of providing easy or out-of-turn darshan services. Their modus operandi involved approaching unsuspecting pilgrims and promising expedited access to the temple's sanctum sanctorum in exchange for monetary payments, exploiting the religious sentiments of the visitors.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by temple authorities in maintaining the sanctity and order at popular pilgrimage sites. The police have assured that further investigations are underway to uncover any potential networks or accomplices involved in such fraudulent activities. Devotees are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the temple management or local law enforcement agencies to prevent similar scams in the future.
