Varanasi Police Engage in Firefight, Apprehend Alleged Cattle Smuggler
In a dramatic incident near the Vishwa Sundari Bridge in Varanasi, Ramnagar police personnel intercepted a truck loaded with cattle on Thursday, leading to an exchange of fire and the arrest of an alleged cattle smuggler. The operation resulted in one suspect being captured after sustaining a bullet injury, while his accomplice managed to evade authorities.
Shootout and Arrest Details
According to police reports, the interception occurred when officers stopped the container truck, which was reportedly heading towards the Bihar border. During the confrontation, the suspects opened fire at the police team. In the retaliatory action, one of the alleged smugglers, identified as Naushad Ahmad, suffered a bullet injury to his leg and was subsequently arrested. Police recovered a firearm and cartridges from the scene and rushed Ahmad to a hospital for medical treatment.
Escape of Accomplice and Ongoing Search
The other suspect, Mubeen, a resident of Kaushambi district, managed to escape during the chaos. Police teams were alerted in the afternoon about his presence on the Mirzapur highway and cordoned off the area. When Mubeen saw police approaching, he attempted to flee after firing at the officers, but in the ensuing action, he also sustained a leg injury and was caught near the bridge. However, he later dodged police custody, and authorities have launched a search operation to locate him.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali) Vijay Pratap Singh stated that the Ramnagar police seized 34 cattle along with the container truck. He revealed that Mubeen has nine cases registered against him in various districts, primarily related to cattle smuggling activities. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat illegal cattle trade in the region.
