Varanasi Police Apprehend Five Robbers in Dramatic Joint Operation Following Gunfight
In a significant breakthrough, the Anpara and Shaktinagar police stations in Varanasi conducted a successful joint operation in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the arrest of five alleged robbers. The confrontation escalated into a gunfight where two of the suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs during retaliatory police fire.
Coordinated Night Patrol Leads to Encounter
Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma detailed the events, explaining that both police stations were engaged in routine night patrolling when they received a critical alert regarding suspicious criminal movement along the Mirchadhuri-Anpara road. Acting swiftly, the two police teams converged on the location from opposite directions, effectively surrounding four individuals who were riding two motorcycles near Kubri Pahadi.
The situation intensified when the surrounded criminals, in a desperate attempt to escape, opened fire on the police personnel. The police team, exercising their right to self-defense, responded with controlled retaliatory fire. During this exchange, two of the accused, identified as Sanjay Yadav and Pankaj Srivastav, both residents of Jhirkaadandi, suffered gunshot wounds to their legs.
Arrests, Recovery, and Hospitalization
Their accomplices, Dheeraj Yadav and Hariom Jaiswal, were apprehended at the scene without injury. Following the arrest, police conducted a thorough search, recovering two pistols, multiple cartridges, the looted goods, and the two motorcycles used by the accused. The injured suspects, Sanjay Yadav and Pankaj Srivastav, were immediately provided medical attention and admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Leveraging information obtained from the initial arrests, the police successfully tracked down and arrested the alleged mastermind of the operation, Chandresh Yadav. This development was crucial in dismantling the entire network.
Connection to March 27 Robbery and Investigation Findings
Superintendent Verma confirmed that this criminal group had been under police surveillance for their involvement in a brazen robbery on March 27. On that date, they allegedly attacked a collection agent working for a finance company. The assailants fled the scene after seizing the agent's bag, which contained cash amounting to Rs 63,000, a biometric machine, a mobile phone, a collection diary, and several other essential documents.
During subsequent interrogation, the arrested individuals revealed that Chandresh Yadav was primarily responsible for selecting the targets for their robberies. The investigation also uncovered a surprising detail: one of the arrested men, Dheeraj Yadav, had previously served as the General Secretary of the Student Union at PG College in Obra, indicating a divergent past before his alleged turn to crime.
This operation marks a significant achievement for the Varanasi police, demonstrating effective coordination and swift action to address serious criminal activity in the region.
