Interstate Vehicle Theft Gang Busted in Hazaribag, Six Arrested
In a significant crackdown, police in Hazaribag have apprehended six individuals allegedly involved in an interstate vehicle theft ring. The arrests occurred during an anti-crime checking drive in the Pelawal outpost area on Wednesday late night. The operation was triggered when a white SUV, bearing a Bihar registration number, broke through a barricade at Indrapuri Chowk and attempted to flee, prompting a swift police response.
Details of the Arrested Individuals
The arrested suspects have been identified as Ashraf Ali, also known as Yasrab Ali, Pappu Khan, or Guruji; Vivek Kumar; Vikas Kumar; Jitendra Kumar Mehta; Mohammad Joni; and Shekhraj. Jitendra is a resident of Hazaribag, while Vikas hails from Palamu. The others are from Aurangabad, Rohtas, and Bihar Sharif in Bihar. All six have been remanded to judicial custody, according to police statements.
Police Operation and Confessions
ASP Amit Kumar provided insights into the operation, stating, “Acting on a tip-off from Lohsinghna police, a team led by Sadar SDPO Amit Anand intercepted the vehicle at a barricade near Gadokhar More. During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to stealing four-wheelers from Hazaribag and adjoining areas and delivering them to liquor operators in Bihar.” This revelation highlights the gang's modus operandi, which involved targeting vehicles in Jharkhand and trafficking them across state lines to Bihar's illicit liquor trade networks.
Ongoing Investigation and Seizures
The Sadar SDPO emphasized that the gang has been active for an extended period, and a probe is underway to trace and arrest other members. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS-2023. Authorities have seized a stolen vehicle and five mobile phones from the accused. Additionally, four vehicles stolen by the gang have been successfully traced, with efforts ongoing to locate others involved in the thefts.
