A 24-year-old vehicle theft suspect, Danesh Sayyed of Kasewadi, escaped from the Kondhwa police station around 7:45 pm on Friday. He was arrested earlier in connection with a stolen motorcycle case.
Escape from Custody
Police constable Tanaji Sarade lodged a complaint against Sayyed later that night. The police have registered a case under Section 262 (escape from lawful custody) of the BNS.
Details of the Arrest
Senior inspector Kumar Ghadge of Kondhwa police stated, 'We arrested Sayyed on May 13 in a vehicle theft case. The court then remanded him in police custody until Saturday. We also recovered a stolen motorcycle from his possession.'
'The suspect was being questioned by a police constable, who was also recording his statement on a computer. Sayyed walked out of the police station when the constable was looking at the computer screen,' he added.
Search Efforts
Police searched for him in and around the police station, but he could not be traced, the officer said.
Previous Criminal Record
'The suspect had stolen the motorcycle from Kondhwa about six months ago. The motorcycle rider had forgotten the keys on the bike. Sayyed used it and sped away with the motorcycle. The suspect was earlier arrested in a mobile snatching case as well. The suspect works as a private driver,' Ghadge said.
