In a shocking incident of parental cruelty, a 43-year-old farmer in Vellore district has been arrested for branding his 10-year-old son with a hot knife. The brutal attack occurred because the child failed to wake up on time for school, revealing a pattern of abuse that neighbors had reported to authorities.

The accused, identified as N Poovarasan, a farmer residing in Kolimedu village, committed the act on Thursday morning. According to police reports, his son, a Class IV student at a private school in Nelloorpettai near Gudiyatham, was sleeping when Poovarasan attempted to wake him for school. When the boy refused to get up, Poovarasan became enraged, heated a small knife, and pressed it against the child's hands, legs, and thighs.
The boy's screams of pain alerted his grandfather, N Natarajan, who rushed to the scene. With the assistance of neighbors, Natarajan immediately took the injured child to Gudiyatham Government Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment for his burns. Poovarasan reportedly threatened his father and neighbors, warning them not to inform the police about the incident.

Gudiyatham taluk inspector C Sivasankar stated that neighbors had previously reported Poovarasan frequently abusing his son, including using lit candles to burn him. The investigation revealed that Poovarasan and his wife, Aimaavathi, have been living separately due to ongoing marital disputes. While Aimaavathi stays at her parents' home, Poovarasan lived with their son, and police believe he was venting his anger toward his wife through the abuse of their child.

He was produced before a local court on Friday, which remanded him to judicial custody.
