Vijayawada Police Intensify Crackdown on Social Media Misuse
In a significant move to combat digital misconduct, the Vijayawada police have registered a total of 1,549 cases over the past year targeting individuals engaged in unlawful activities on social media platforms. This enforcement drive has led to the arrest of 1,344 persons, while authorities have identified and taken down 4,529 derogatory posts that were circulating online.
Zero Tolerance Policy Against Digital Menace
Emphasizing a strict zero-tolerance approach, Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta conducted a high-level review meeting in Amaravati on Tuesday. He highlighted that numerous individuals and organized groups have been actively disseminating harmful content, including politically motivated posts, communally sensitive messages, rumors, and misinformation across various social media channels. DGP Gupta cautioned that such activities not only mislead the public but also pose a severe threat to peace and social harmony in the region.
Stringent Legal Measures Implemented
To address these violations, the police have invoked provisions under the Information Technology Act and stringent sections related to organized crime under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused persons and groups. Officials have indicated that sections under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita will be applied where necessary, including provisions like trial in absentia to ensure that offenders are held accountable and punished effectively.
Enhanced Enforcement and Monitoring
Repeat offenders and organized networks will face severe legal consequences, which may include account blocking and advanced tracking measures, even if they attempt to remain anonymous online. To bolster these efforts, a dedicated social media monitoring unit has been established. This unit is equipped with state-of-the-art tools such as:
- AI-based monitoring systems
- Sentiment analysis software
- Real-time surveillance capabilities
- OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) techniques
- Digital forensics resources
Public Advisory and Responsibility
Police authorities have urged citizens to act responsibly in the digital space. They advise the public to verify information thoroughly before sharing and to refrain from spreading unverified content. Violations of these guidelines will invite strict and unavoidable legal action, as part of the ongoing crackdown to maintain online safety and social order.
