Vizag Traffic Crackdown: Helmet Violations Top 60% of Offences in April 2026 Drive

In Visakhapatnam, helmet violations continue to dominate the city's traffic offence list, accounting for nearly 60% of all cases booked during the ongoing April 2026 special enforcement drives. From Beach Road to Municipal Road, traffic discipline is noticeably thinning, with authorities reporting over 2,400 violations daily this month.

Daily Offence Breakdown and Enforcement Actions

On average, police are recording approximately 1,100 cases against two-wheeler riders without helmets and an additional 250 cases against pillion riders who fail to wear protective headgear. Helmet offences remain the largest and most persistent category, with some motorists resorting to using low-quality, non-ISI certified helmets merely to evade checks, thereby severely compromising their own safety, as highlighted by a senior traffic officer.

Following helmet violations, overspeeding emerges as the next major offence, with between 200 and 250 motorists being booked daily for exceeding speed limits. Other common violations include:

ADCP (Traffic) K Praveen Kumar confirmed these trends, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in maintaining road discipline across Vizag.

Police Response and Safety Concerns

Riders caught without helmets are systematically stopped, educated on the importance of head protection, and subsequently fined ₹1,000. Police have noted that half-helmets offer minimal protection in accidents, and delivery partners are frequently observed riding bareheaded, exposing themselves to significant risk.

Non-compliance is particularly prevalent among young riders and pillion passengers, who often underestimate the severe risks of head injuries in traffic accidents. In addition to the monetary penalty, police are collecting violators' licence details and forwarding them to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), actively seeking three-month suspensions for repeat offenders to deter future violations.

This comprehensive approach aims not only to penalize but also to instill a culture of safety among Vizag's motorists, addressing the root causes of rampant helmet negligence.
