Young Vizagites Emerge as Top Traffic Violators, Prompting Strict Speed Limit Enforcement
In a concerning trend for road safety, young residents of Visakhapatnam are emerging as the most frequent traffic violators, particularly for overspeeding. This has prompted the city police to strictly enforce newly notified speed limits in an effort to curb the rising number of road accidents.
Alarming Statistics on Overspeeding Violations
On average, nearly 200 motorists are being booked every day for overspeeding across the city. Shockingly, youngsters account for approximately 70 percent of these violators. Many of these young drivers have reportedly claimed ignorance about the revised speed limits, highlighting a gap in awareness despite police efforts.
New Uniform Speed Limits Implemented Across Key Stretches
Under the new regulations, a uniform speed limit of 40 kmph has been imposed on several critical stretches of Visakhapatnam. These include:
- The NH-16 corridor from Kurmannapalem Junction to Kommadi Junction
- The Beach Road stretch from Fishing Harbour to Bheemili via Sagarnagar and Rushikonda
- All municipal roads and BRTS corridors—from Adavivaram to Vepagunta and from Bhaji Junction to Kancharapalem Mettu
This comprehensive approach aims to create a safer driving environment throughout the city.
Police Action and Enforcement Measures
In just the first two weeks of April 2026, the traffic police booked over 2,400 overspeeding cases. ADCP (Traffic) K Praveen Kumar emphasized that new speed-limit signboards have been installed at prominent locations across the city, and awareness drives have been conducted to educate motorists. "Overspeeding is one of the major causes of road crashes in the city. We are strictly enforcing violations and will intensify special drives on more stretches in the coming days," he stated.
Persistent Violations Despite Clear Regulations
Despite the stipulated 40 kmph limit on Beach Road, young motorists were found driving at speeds of up to 60 kmph, particularly near Park Hotel, Rushikonda, and Yendada. A senior traffic police inspector noted that most violators on this stretch were two-wheeler riders, predominantly youngsters. This indicates a persistent disregard for traffic rules among certain segments of the driving population.
Penalties for Overspeeding Offences
The consequences for violating speed limits are significant:
- For a first-time overspeeding offence, violators are fined Rs 1,035.
- Repeat offenders face higher penalties, including a recommendation to the road transport authorities for suspension of driving licences for three months.
These measures are designed to deter reckless driving and promote compliance with traffic regulations.
Overspeeding's Devastating Impact on Road Safety
Overspeeding continues to be a major contributor to road accidents in Visakhapatnam. In 2025 alone, the city recorded 1,086 road accidents, including 333 fatal cases that claimed 349 lives and left 1,038 injured. Particularly alarming is the data from NH-16, which alone accounted for 149 deaths and 388 injuries. These statistics underscore the urgent need for effective traffic management and stricter enforcement of speed limits to protect lives on the road.
