Prayagraj: A wanted criminal, carrying a cash reward of Rs 25,000, was injured and arrested in a police encounter in Kaushambi on Saturday night. The criminal, identified as Raees Ahmed, sustained a bullet injury and was admitted to the district hospital for treatment. A country-made pistol of 0.315 bore, one used and one unused cartridge, and Rs 2,070 in cash were recovered from his possession.
A senior police officer said that a team of Manjhanpur police was conducting routine checks near Santoo Ka dera on Hanzapur Road when they noticed a suspicious man roaming with the intent to commit a crime. The police surrounded him, but he opened fire. The police retaliated, leaving the criminal injured in the exchange of fire.
Police said that Raees, a resident of Turtipur in Kaushambi, has 11 criminal cases pending against him in Kaushambi and other districts. He was involved in cattle smuggling and theft cases. The injured criminal is currently under police custody at the hospital, and further investigation is underway.
