Wanted Criminal Apprehended Following Dramatic Police Encounter in Chandigarh
In a significant breakthrough, the Chandigarh Police's operation cell successfully apprehended a wanted criminal following a brief but intense encounter in Sector 25 during the early hours of Wednesday. The dramatic operation resulted in the accused sustaining a bullet injury to his leg, necessitating immediate medical attention at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), where medical professionals confirmed his condition remained stable throughout treatment.
Police Operation Based on Specific Intelligence
Deputy Superintendent of Police Vikash Sheokand revealed that the entire operation was initiated based on credible intelligence received by authorities. Acting swiftly on this tip-off, police personnel established a strategic checkpost in Sector 25 to intercept the suspect. When the accused, identified as Mukesh alias Golu, arrived at the location and detected the police presence, he reportedly responded with immediate aggression.
"The suspect opened fire without provocation, discharging three rounds directly at our police team," DSP Sheokand stated emphatically. "In legitimate self-defense and as a necessary response to this threat, our officers returned fire, resulting in one bullet striking the accused in his leg. He collapsed on the roadway and was subsequently subdued and taken into custody."
Sophisticated Weaponry Recovered from Accused
Following the apprehension, police conducted a thorough search and recovered significant evidence from Mukesh. Authorities seized a sophisticated pistol along with multiple live cartridges, highlighting the dangerous nature of the individual and the potential threat he posed to public safety. The recovery of such weaponry underscores the critical importance of this police operation in removing illegal firearms from circulation within the city.
Criminal Background and Family Connections
Investigations revealed that Mukesh had been officially declared a proclaimed offender by a Chandigarh district court. This designation stemmed from his alleged involvement in a firing incident that occurred in Maloya back in 2021, demonstrating a pattern of violent behavior. Further background checks uncovered disturbing family connections to criminal activities.
Police confirmed that Mukesh's brother, identified as Sunny Gohana, is currently incarcerated in Jhajjar jail located in Haryana. Sunny faces serious charges under the Arms Act along with an attempt-to-murder case, suggesting a family history of violent criminal conduct. Authorities asserted that Mukesh himself was actively engaged in supplying illegal firearms throughout Chandigarh, contributing to the city's weapon distribution network.
Recent Pattern of Police Encounters in Chandigarh
This incident represents the latest in a series of police encounters targeting armed criminals in Chandigarh. Just recently on January 21, the crime branch arrested two individuals allegedly involved in a separate firing case following another encounter in Sector 39. In that previous operation, both suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs during the apprehension process, mirroring the outcome of Wednesday's operation.
The consistent pattern of leg injuries in these encounters suggests police are employing measured force designed to incapacitate suspects without causing fatal harm, while effectively neutralizing immediate threats to officer safety and public security. These operations demonstrate Chandigarh Police's continued vigilance and proactive approach to combating armed criminal elements within the city.
