A wedding celebration in Pilibhit district took a tragic turn when a 27-year-old labour contractor allegedly fired a country-made pistol, critically injuring a guest. The incident occurred during the wedding of a rice mill worker's daughter in a village under the Puranpur police station area.

Details of the Incident

The victim, identified as Jagatveer, was hit by a bullet after the accused, Rajat Kumar, allegedly fired the weapon while dancing to DJ music. Jagatveer was initially taken to a community health centre and later referred to Pilibhit's Autonomous State Medical College Hospital, where his condition remains critical.

Accused's Background

Puranpur CO Prateek Dayiha stated that Rajat Kumar, a resident of the same village, works as a labour contractor. He had arranged a job for the bride's father, Ramnath, at a rice mill in Puranpur and was invited to the wedding. The motive behind the shooting is under investigation.

Legal Action Taken

SHO Pawan Pandey confirmed that the accused has been taken into custody. The .32 bore country-made pistol used in the celebratory firing was also seized. Rajat Kumar has been booked under BNS section 109(1) (attempt to murder) and further legal proceedings are underway.

Authorities have condemned the act of celebratory firing and reiterated warnings against such dangerous practices. The police are also investigating if the accused had any prior criminal record. The victim's family has been informed, and medical expenses are being covered by the state health scheme.
