West Bengal Bar Council Election Generates Poll-Like Atmosphere in Kolkata
The city of Kolkata was enveloped in a distinctly electoral ambiance on Monday as the West Bengal Bar Council election got underway. This significant event for the legal community saw prominent figures vying for positions, creating a buzz reminiscent of political polls across the city.
Key Candidates and Electoral Process
The election features notable candidates including Ashok Deb, the Trinamool Congress MLA representing Budge Budge, who previously served as the council chairman. Other contenders are former MP Subhashis Chakraborty and Kolkata Municipal Corporation MMiC Baiswanar Chatterjee. Polling commenced at 10 am on Monday and is scheduled to continue through Tuesday, accommodating over 10,000 advocates across three booths established at the high court.
Supreme Court Directive and Monitoring Committee
This election follows a Supreme Court directive mandating the completion of all bar council elections by late April. In response, a dedicated monitoring committee was formed to oversee the process. The committee comprises distinguished members:
- Justice (retd) Ashim Kumar Roy
- Justice (retd) D Krishna Kumar
- Advocate General Kishore Dutta
This oversight aims to ensure a fair and transparent electoral procedure, with the previous election having been held in 2021.
Transparency Measures and Peaceful Proceedings
Officials reported that the election process has been conducted peacefully, with stringent measures in place to uphold integrity. "The process was peaceful. State election commission ballot boxes were used, sealed in the treasury, and video recorded for transparency," a representative stated. These steps include the use of official ballot boxes from the state election commission, which are securely sealed and stored in the treasury, accompanied by video recordings to document the entire process for accountability.
The election not only highlights the active participation of legal professionals in Kolkata but also underscores the adherence to judicial directives in organizing such crucial democratic exercises within the bar council framework.
