Joint Police Operation in Prayagraj Nabs Wildlife Traffickers, Recovers Rare Two-Headed Snake
A coordinated effort by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) culminated in a significant breakthrough against wildlife crime on Monday in Prayagraj. The joint team successfully apprehended three individuals suspected of operating a wildlife trafficking network and confiscated four live snakes, including a highly unusual two-headed sand boa and a dangerous black cobra.
Arrests Made During Routine Platform Inspection
The arrests were executed during a standard security and checking operation conducted at Platform Number 1 of the bustling Prayagraj Junction railway station. Authorities identified and detained the suspects as Karan Nath, Akesh Nath, and Mohit Nath, all residents of Prayagraj and Rae Bareli districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The seized reptiles, which represent protected species under wildlife laws, were immediately transferred into the custody of officials from the state forest department for proper care and rehabilitation.
Investigation Aims to Uncover Larger Smuggling Network
Following the arrests, police have formally registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. Law enforcement officials have emphasized that this seizure is just the tip of the iceberg, and a thorough investigation is now underway. The primary objective is to gather critical intelligence, trace the supply chain, and ultimately dismantle the broader criminal network involved in the illegal trade of endangered wildlife across the region.
This incident highlights the persistent threat posed by wildlife trafficking in India and underscores the importance of vigilant, inter-agency cooperation. The recovery of a rare two-headed sand boa, in particular, points to the trafficking of exotic and genetically unique specimens, which often command high prices on the black market.
