Woman Arrested in Guwahati for Alleged Defamatory Social Media Posts Against Zubeen Garg
Police in Guwahati made an arrest on Monday. They took a woman into custody for posting offensive and defamatory remarks about the late singer Zubeen Garg on social media platforms.
Complaint from Zubeen Garg's Wife Leads to Arrest
The accused woman is Sikha Sarma. Guwahati police identified her after receiving a formal complaint. Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, filed that complaint with the Crime Branch of the Guwahati police.
A senior police officer provided details about the case. Authorities registered a case against Sarma under several charges. These charges include provoking a breach of peace, defamation, and promoting enmity between different groups.
Swift Police Action Following FIR
Law enforcement acted quickly after filing the First Information Report (FIR). Officers arrested Sikha Sarma from her residence. She lives in the Patharquary area of Guwahati.
Sources familiar with the matter described the complaint's content. Garima's complaint referenced a series of objectionable posts. Sikha Sarma allegedly wrote these posts on social media over an extended period.
The accusations are serious. Sarma is accused of making demeaning and personal comments. These comments targeted the character and legacy of the late singer Zubeen Garg.
Garima Saikia Garg Speaks Out
Garima Saikia Garg addressed the media after filing the police complaint. She expressed disbelief at the social media posts.
"I cannot believe that someone can write such things about Zubeen," Garima stated. "Initially, we chose to ignore her. We assumed she was mentally unstable. However, there is a limit to our patience."
She further elaborated on the nature of the alleged offenses. Garima claimed the social media posts amounted to defamation and criminal intimidation. She also cited hate speech and communal provocation.
These actions, she argued, had the potential to disturb law and order in the state of Assam.
"She also made objectionable comments about my sister-in-law and father-in-law," Garima added. "This woman shows no respect for Assam or the sentiments of the Assamese people. The derogatory remarks directed at me and my family are completely unacceptable."
Fan Club Adds to the Complaint
Members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club also took action. They lodged a separate complaint at the Dispur police station. This complaint targeted Sikha Sarma over the same issue.
Club president Piku Borgohain spoke about the situation. He noted that the public is actively seeking justice for Zubeen Garg. Borgohain accused Sarma of diverting attention from this important issue.
The arrest highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the legacy of the beloved singer. It also underscores the legal consequences for harmful social media activity in Assam.
