Woman Arrested for Posing as Widow to Usurp Property Worth Crores

Varanasi: The Rohaniya police on Monday arrested a woman who allegedly conspired to usurp property worth crores of rupees by posing as the widow of an unmarried man. The accused, identified as Sarita Devi (44), a resident of Parsipur Baraila in Bhadohi district, was taken into custody after a detailed investigation. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest her five alleged accomplices — Prakhar Singh, Vishal Singh, Shivam Kumar Singh, Rajesh Kumar Singh of Todarpur in the Rajatalab area, and Sanjana Devi of Bhadohi.

The case came to light after Ram Bilas Yadav, a resident of Jakkhini, lodged a complaint at Rohaniya police station on March 16. In his complaint, Yadav stated that his brother, Babulal, was unmarried and had died on October 25, 2019. Following his death, Sarita, allegedly in collusion with an organized gang, hatched a conspiracy to fraudulently claim ownership of Babulal’s land by posing as his widow. The gang used forged documents to execute the scheme, which involved obtaining a fake death certificate of Babulal from the municipal body and altering Sarita’s Aadhaar card to replace her husband’s name with Babulal’s name.

During the investigation, police uncovered the modus operandi of Sarita’s gang. According to officials, the gang procured a forged death certificate of Babulal from the concerned municipal body and managed to replace the name of Sarita’s husband with Babulal’s name on her Aadhaar card. Sarita also allegedly got her own name, along with that of her daughter Sanjana, entered in the family (Kutumb) register to project herself as Babulal’s legal heir. Police said a detailed scrutiny of the documents revealed that Sarita and her associates had forged all the papers. Using these fabricated documents, she also executed a fraudulent land sale agreement. Following the findings, police arrested Sarita and sent her to jail.

The case highlights the need for stringent verification of documents in property transactions to prevent such fraudulent activities.
