Woman Attacked with Blade After Refusing Religious Conversion and Marriage
A shocking incident of violence unfolded in Mirzapur, Varanasi, where a 20-year-old woman sustained grave injuries after being attacked by her former boyfriend. The assault, which occurred on Friday night, stemmed from months of alleged pressure to convert to her boyfriend's religion and marry him.
Months of Pressure Culminate in Brutal Attack
According to the police complaint filed by the victim's brother, the accused, identified as Abdul alias Saif, had been pressuring the woman for several months to change her religion as a condition for marriage. Unable to withstand this coercion, the woman ended the relationship. Enraged by her refusal, Saif allegedly attacked her with a blade on Friday night.
The victim's mother witnessed the assault and immediately raised an alarm. However, before other family members and neighbours could intervene, the accused managed to flee the scene. The injured woman was rushed to the district hospital and later referred to the trauma centre at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for advanced care.
Police Swiftly Register FIR and Launch Manhunt
Acting promptly, the Katra Kotwali police registered a named First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday. Mirzapur ASP (City) Nitesh Singh confirmed that the case has been lodged under serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 333 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 109(1) (murder attempt).
Critically, the police have also invoked sections of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. ASP Singh stated that seven persons have been detained for interrogation in connection with the case. Police teams are actively working to arrest the absconding main accused, Saif.
Community Sensitivities Prompt Heavy Police Deployment
Sensing the gravity of the situation, which involves two communities, the district administration deployed a heavy police force in the area to prevent any escalation of tension. Senior police officials also visited the spot to oversee the investigation and maintain law and order.
ASP Nitesh Singh provided an update on the victim's condition, stating that she is now out of danger. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the victim and the accused had been in a relationship for about a year prior to the incident. The police are making concerted efforts for the early arrest of the accused.
