A tragic incident unfolded in Katra village, Sitapur, on Thursday, where a 56-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her son after she refused to give him money to purchase liquor. The deceased has been identified as Shiv Kumari. Her elder son, Harendra Kumar, aged 36, who is reportedly an alcoholic, has been named as the primary accused in the case.
The horrifying discovery was made around 9 am when Harendra stepped out of his house and informed local residents that his mother had died. He then returned to his hut and lay down. Villagers noted that he appeared heavily intoxicated, which raised immediate suspicion. The police were alerted soon after the information spread.
A police team arrived at the scene and recovered Shiv Kumari's body beneath a thatched structure. Preliminary findings indicate that she was assaulted with a wooden stick, leading to her death. The victim's younger son, Ashok, aged 31, alleged that Harendra frequently demanded money from their mother for liquor and would physically assault her when she refused. He told the police that a similar altercation on Wednesday escalated into the fatal attack on Thursday.
Villagers claimed that the accused had beaten his mother a day earlier as well, but no one anticipated that the assault would turn fatal. While some locals said Harendra was later taken away by authorities, police stated that he had fled the scene. Efforts are underway to apprehend him.
SHO Ashutosh Mishra confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) for murder has been registered based on Ashok's complaint. The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively searching for the accused.
