Tragic Death of Woman Police Constable in Chennai Leads to Husband's Arrest
In a distressing incident in Chennai, a 29-year-old woman police constable was discovered deceased at her residence in Egmore on Wednesday night. Her husband, who also serves as a police constable, has been taken into custody on charges of abetment to suicide.
Allegations of Dowry Harassment and Physical Abuse Surface
The family of the deceased woman has come forward with serious accusations, claiming that she was driven to her death due to persistent dowry harassment and sustained physical abuse. This has cast a shadow over the circumstances leading to her tragic end.
Background of the Deceased and Her Husband
The victim, identified as Bhuvaneswari, hailed from Pulichapallam near Vanur in Villupuram district. She joined the Tamil Nadu police force in 2016 and was initially posted at the Avadi Battalion. At the time of her death, she was serving on special duty at the Egmore crime wing police station.
Bhuvaneswari fell in love with Silambarasan, a 31-year-old armed police constable attached to the Pudupet Armed Reserve of the Greater Chennai Police. The couple married in 2024 with the consent of both families. Silambarasan is a native of Puliyanjeri in Tiruvarur district.
Details of the Incident and Family's Account
According to statements from the family, Silambarasan subjected Bhuvaneswari to physical abuse, and the couple frequently engaged in quarrels. On the fateful Wednesday night, Silambarasan returned home in an inebriated state and argued with Bhuvaneswari before retiring to bed.
In the morning, Silambarasan found his wife hanging and immediately raised an alarm. The discovery has prompted a thorough investigation into the events leading up to her death.
Legal and Procedural Steps Following the Death
Since Bhuvaneswari died within two years of her marriage, a mandatory revenue divisional officer inquiry has been ordered as per legal protocols. Her body has been sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
This case highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence and dowry-related crimes, even within law enforcement families, underscoring the need for stricter measures and support systems.
