Woman Drugs 11 Family Members, Including Children, to Elope Before Wedding in Amroha
In a shocking incident in Amroha district, a 21-year-old woman allegedly drugged 11 members of her family, including four children under the age of 10, before eloping with her lover just days ahead of her scheduled wedding on April 5. The incident, which occurred on the night of March 29 in the Amroha Dehat area, has led to the arrest of all three accused, who have been remanded to judicial custody after being produced before a court, as confirmed by police on Wednesday.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to the complaint filed with authorities, the accused woman, identified as Nargis, conspired with her lover, Mohd Rizwan (24), a carpenter, and his associate, Junaid Khan, to procure intoxicants. They allegedly mixed these substances into the food served to the family during what should have been a bustling period of wedding preparations. As the household fell unusually silent late into the night, neighbours grew suspicious and entered the home, discovering family members in a semi-conscious state.
The victims were immediately rushed to a district hospital, where some were reported to be in critical condition. Police investigations revealed that Nargis had been in a relationship with Rizwan for eight to nine years. Faced with her family's arrangement of a marriage to another man, she reportedly devised the plan to drug her family as a means to escape and elope with her long-term partner.
Legal Actions and Medical Confirmation
Circle officer Avadhbhan Singh Bhadauria stated, "The woman had been in a relationship with Rizwan for eight to nine years. As her family had arranged her marriage with another man, she decided to elope with her lover after drugging her family. Medical examination has confirmed the use of intoxicants." This medical evidence has been crucial in substantiating the allegations against the accused.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 87, which pertains to abduction to compel marriage, and 123, related to causing hurt by administering poison or intoxicants. Officials emphasized that these charges reflect the severity of the crime, which not only endangered lives but also disrupted family dynamics and social norms.
Broader Implications and Community Response
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting issues such as forced marriages, personal autonomy, and criminal methods used in elopement cases. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure all aspects of the crime are thoroughly examined, and the accused remain in custody pending further legal proceedings. This case serves as a stark reminder of the extreme measures some individuals may resort to when faced with familial pressure, underscoring the need for awareness and preventive measures in similar situations.
