Woman Found Dead in West Champaran, Husband and Father-in-Law Arrested for Dowry Murder

A tragic incident has shaken the Chanpatia area of West Champaran district, where a 30-year-old married woman was discovered dead under highly suspicious circumstances on Sunday evening. The case has quickly escalated into allegations of a dowry-related murder, leading to the arrest of the victim's husband and father-in-law by local police authorities.

Victim Identified as Renu Devi

The deceased has been identified as Renu Devi, wife of Deependra Pandit, residing in Chanpatia Bazaar. Originally from Bhediharwa village under the Sathi police station jurisdiction, Renu had been married since 2018. The discovery of her body in ward number 3 of the Chanpatia police station area has triggered a serious police investigation and family allegations of foul play.

Conflicting Accounts of Death

According to the victim's mother, Shanti Devi, the family received distressing news about the incident around 7 PM. "We reached her matrimonial home by 8 PM and found the police already present at the scene," she recounted. "Her body was lying on a bed inside a room, and a dupatta was hanging from a ceiling hook, which immediately raised our suspicions."

While the in-laws maintained that Renu had died by suicide, her parents presented a starkly different narrative. They alleged that their daughter had been strangled to death and that the crime scene had been deliberately staged to resemble a hanging case, potentially to mislead investigators.

Dowry Harassment Allegations Surface

In a formal complaint lodged at Chanpatia police station, Shanti Devi made serious accusations against her son-in-law Deependra Pandit, father-in-law Rajendra Pandit, and other family members. The complaint detailed:

  • Harassment and murder over persistent dowry demands
  • Physical and mental torture since marriage for failing to meet financial demands of Rs 2–3 lakh and other items
  • Taunting and pressure related to not having children
  • Allegation that Renu was assaulted and killed on the evening of March 29, after which her body was hung to create a false narrative

Police Investigation Underway

Chanpatia Station House Officer Amit Kumar provided details about the police response. "Our team reached the spot promptly after receiving information about the incident," he stated. "The body was immediately sent to Government Medical College and Hospital in Bettiah for a comprehensive post-mortem examination."

The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the complaint and have taken the husband and father-in-law into custody. "The case remains under active investigation, and further legal action will be determined based on the post-mortem report findings and additional evidence collected," SHO Kumar emphasized.

This case highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in certain regions, with authorities now working to uncover the truth behind Renu Devi's untimely death while her family seeks justice for what they believe was a preventable tragedy.
