A 56-year-old woman from Sukhsagarnagar in Pune fell victim to a cleverly orchestrated theft, losing her gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.8 lakh. The incident involved two women and a young boy who approached her in Bibvewadi, seeking assistance under false pretenses. The victim filed a complaint with the Bharati Vidyapeeth police, and the case was subsequently transferred to the Bibvewadi police on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
According to an officer from the Bibvewadi police, the incident occurred around 6:15 pm on May 17. The woman was standing near Dolphin Chowk when a boy approached her and requested help to reach his home in Rajasthan. While she was speaking with him, two women joined them and urged the complainant to assist the boy.
The officer explained that the two women managed to persuade the woman to accompany them in an autorickshaw, claiming that the boy had a large amount of cash with him. During the ride, the suspects told her to remove her gold jewellery and place it in a bag along with the cash the boy supposedly had, for safekeeping until they could purchase a ticket for him.
The Theft
Trusting the suspects, the woman removed her gold jewellery worth Rs 1.8 lakh. The two women pretended to help her keep the jewellery in the bag and also placed an alleged bundle of notes inside. They then diverted her attention and fled the scene with the jewellery.
When the complainant opened the bag later, she was shocked to find sand and pieces of paper instead of her jewellery and the currency notes. The officer confirmed that the police have recovered CCTV footage from the area and investigations are ongoing.
Police Investigation
The police are analyzing the CCTV footage to identify the suspects. They have urged citizens to remain cautious when approached by strangers seeking help, especially involving valuables. The case highlights the need for vigilance against such deceptive tactics.
