Mentally Unstable Woman Lynched in Gumla Village Over Child-Lifting Rumors
In a horrific incident that has shocked the community, a 50-year-old mentally unstable woman was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over child-lifting rumors at Guriatarn village in Gumla district, Jharkhand. The tragic event occurred on Sunday night, approximately 65 kilometers from the district headquarters, according to police officials.

Police have arrested four individuals on charges of mob lynching, while a formal case has been registered against 15-20 people involved in the incident. The arrests were made on Monday following intensive investigation efforts.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the woman was spotted roaming in the village during nighttime hours. Some residents, influenced by circulating child-lifting rumors, mistakenly suspected her of being involved in such activities. As the woman attempted to protect herself, villagers pursued her and initiated a violent assault.
A man from a neighboring village made the grim discovery of the injured woman tied to a tree with ropes. He immediately alerted local authorities, prompting police intervention. Officers rescued the critically injured woman and transported her to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Bishunpur for emergency medical treatment.
Police Response and Investigation
Officer-in-Charge Arjun Kumar Yadav of Bishunpur police station provided detailed insights into the police response. "We received information around 11:30 PM and reached the spot promptly," Yadav stated. "Guriatarn village consists of only four households, but residents from nearby villages had gathered there after hearing the child-lifting rumors."
The police team managed to rescue the severely injured woman and admitted her to Bishunpur CHC. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries within thirty minutes of arrival at the medical facility. "The woman was seen near the residence of Tetra Oraon at Guriatarn," Yadav explained. "When villagers approached her, the mentally unstable woman began fleeing. She was soon caught and brutally beaten with sticks by the assembled mob."
Authorities have registered a case under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against 15-20 unidentified individuals. The post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday, with the body currently kept at the mortuary of Sadar Hospital. Police are actively working to establish the victim's identity through investigative procedures.
Recent Similar Incident and Official Appeal
This tragic event follows another concerning incident that occurred approximately two weeks earlier. At Banari village, located just 6 kilometers from Bishunpur police station, a man was apprehended by villagers under similar suspicions of child-lifting. Fortunately, authorities were able to rescue him before any serious harm occurred.
The district administration has issued a strong appeal to the public regarding such situations. Officials have urged citizens not to pay heed to unverified rumors and, in cases of suspicion, to immediately inform the local police station or district control room rather than taking matters into their own hands.
