Tragic Electrocution Claims Life of Guest Worker in Tiruvallur Construction Site Accident
A devastating incident unfolded at a construction site in Tiruvallur on Monday evening, resulting in the death of a guest worker from Bihar. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Shawkat, succumbed to electrocution while heroically attempting to rescue his co-worker who had slipped from a ladder.
Details of the Fatal Accident
According to police reports, the workers were engaged in electrical work inside an under-construction two-storey restaurant. Shawkat was positioned on an aluminium ladder, with his 25-year-old co-worker Kalam on another ladder adjacent to him. The tragedy struck when Kalam lost his balance and slipped, causing an electrical wire to come into contact with his ladder.
In a desperate bid to prevent Kalam from falling, Shawkat reached out to grab his hand. This act of bravery proved fatal as Shawkat accidentally made contact with the live wire, suffering a severe electric shock that threw him off the ladder with tremendous force.
Immediate Aftermath and Investigation
Co-workers rushed the critically injured Shawkat to Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Kalam, who sustained injuries in the initial fall, is currently undergoing medical treatment at the same facility.
Tiruvallur Town Police conducted a thorough inspection of the accident site and have registered a case of accidental death. The investigation is now focusing on potential safety violations at the construction site, including:
- Lack of proper protective gear for workers
- Inadequate adherence to electrical safety protocols
- Possible negligence in implementing workplace safety measures
Police noted that two other workers at the site escaped unharmed, likely because they were wearing footwear that provided insulation from the electrical current.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
The body has been sent for postmortem examination as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this preventable tragedy. This incident highlights serious concerns about workplace safety standards in construction environments, particularly regarding electrical work protocols and protective equipment requirements.
The death of Shawkat, a migrant worker from Bihar, underscores the vulnerabilities faced by guest workers in hazardous occupations and raises questions about safety enforcement at construction sites across the region.
