Worker Injured in Blast at Pune Site, Contractors Booked

A 35-year-old construction worker, Babalu Shaikh, suffered severe leg injuries while drilling a hole for controlled blasting at a construction site in Ravet on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred when an unused gelatin stick from a previous blast exploded unexpectedly.

Incident Details

The Ravet police have registered a case under section 288 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances) and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against two site contractors. Assistant inspector Rahul Kumbhar of the Ravet police informed that a housing project is under construction in the area.

On Monday, the site contractors conducted three controlled blasts. On Tuesday, they decided to carry out one more blast. The duo instructed workers to drill holes at the same spots without verifying whether the gelatin sticks from Monday's blasting were completely destroyed. When Shaikh began drilling, an unused gelatin stick exploded, causing severe injuries to his legs.

Legal Action

The officer stated that the contractors possessed a license for controlled blasting at the site. However, they failed to obtain prior permission from the police and violated the prohibitory order issued on May 25 by joint commissioner of police Shashikant Mahavarkar of the Pimpri Chinchwad police. Consequently, a case has been registered against the two contractors.

The investigation is ongoing, and further legal proceedings will follow. Authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols and obtaining necessary permissions to prevent such accidents in the future.
