A tragic incident has been reported from Amloh in Punjab, where a 22-year-old youth died by suicide while in police custody. The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of a nearby village. According to the police, he was arrested earlier in connection with a theft case and was lodged in the lock-up at the Amloh police station.
Incident Details
On the night of the incident, around 11 PM, Gurpreet Singh allegedly used his shirt to hang himself from the ceiling of the lock-up. The police personnel on duty noticed the incident and immediately rushed him to the local civil hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The family of the deceased has alleged negligence on the part of the police, claiming that he was mentally harassed.
Police Response
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fatehgarh Sahib has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter. The concerned officials have been directed to submit a detailed report at the earliest. The police have also registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC (unnatural death) and are investigating the circumstances leading to the suicide. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further action will be taken based on the inquiry report.
This incident has once again raised questions about the safety and mental well-being of individuals in police custody. Human rights activists have called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those found responsible.
