A 27-year-old youth from Meonwal village in Phillaur was crushed to death by a tipper on Sunday evening while returning from his shop in Talwan. The victim, identified as Kamaljit Singh, was married two years ago.
Family Refuses Last Rites, Demands Justice
The family has not performed the last rites, insisting on justice. Kamaljit's father, Amrik Singh, along with villagers and social activists, staged a dharna demanding action against the tipper owner. The family alleges that the tipper belongs to a prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in the Phillaur-Nakodar area, and that police are pressuring them to reach a compromise.
Punjab SC Commission Takes Suo Motu Notice
The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has taken suo motu notice of the case, which involves a Dalit family. Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi has sought a report from the SSP, Jalandhar Rural, by June 17. The report is to be submitted through the Deputy Superintendent of Police. Garhi stated that he will visit Meonwal village on June 19 to meet the bereaved family.
Garhi assured that the commission will ensure strict action against those responsible for the youth's death. He added that the commission will also examine allegations of illegal mining in the Phillaur constituency, which residents claim poses a threat to public safety.
Allegations of Illegal Mining Link
The chairman took serious note of a statement by senior AAP leader Prem Kumar, who alleged that illegal mining activities have increased in the assembly constituency over the past 15 days and that the fatal tipper accident involving the Dalit youth is linked to such activities.
A case related to the incident is under investigation, and the commission has sought a detailed report from the district police authorities.
