Guwahati: The fast-track court established for the expedited trial of the Zubeen Garg death case concluded its hearing on the bail application of accused Shekharjyoti Goswami on Monday but has reserved its judgment. The verdict on the plea is scheduled to be announced on May 28.
Background of the Case
Shekharjyoti, who was a bandmate of the late singer Zubeen Garg, has been incarcerated along with six other individuals since September of the previous year in connection with the singer's death. Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He had traveled to the island nation on September 17 and was scheduled to perform at the fourth edition of the North East India Festival.
Investigation and Charges
Following the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted an extensive probe and submitted a chargesheet in December. The chargesheet named seven accused, including festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta. Among them, four individuals have been booked on charges of murder.
Earlier, the court had rejected bail pleas for Mahanta and Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma. The court is now deliberating on the bail application of Shekharjyoti Goswami, with the final order expected later this month.
The case has drawn significant public attention, and the court's decision on May 28 will be closely watched by the families of the accused and the public alike.
