2 Manimajra youths swept away in Ghaggar; 1 body recovered

One of the two youths from Manimajra who were swept away in the swollen Ghaggar river near the Bhankharpur bridge near Mubarikpur has been found dead, while search operations continue for the second missing person. Their friend managed to survive the incident that occurred on Friday afternoon.

Victims and Incident Details

Locals identified the victims as Surender, Darshan, and Chanda, all residents of Indira Colony in Manimajra. The trio had gone to the river by auto-rickshaw to catch fish on Friday afternoon. According to eyewitness accounts, Darshan allegedly slipped into the swollen river and was immediately carried away by the strong current. Surender attempted to rescue him but was also swept away. Chanda, however, managed to grab hold of nearby bushes and pulled himself to safety.

Family's Account and Search Efforts

Surender's wife recounted, "The three men left home around 2:30 pm on Friday. Chanda came home to inform us. We then reached here along with our family members and the colony pradhan." After being alerted, family members of the two missing men searched for them until late Friday evening but were unable to locate them.

Mubarikpur police post in-charge Kulwant Singh stated that rescue and search operations have been underway for the past two days with the assistance of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies. Darshan's body was recovered on Sunday morning, while efforts to trace Surender are continuing. Both victims are approximately 45 years old. Surender is survived by his wife and three sons.
