Electrocution Kills Two PSP Youths Near Rauke Kalan Canal

Two young employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) died of electrocution on July 10, 2026, while taking shelter under a tree near Rauke Kalan village in Moga district. The victims were identified as Amritpal Singh, 27, and Sukhpreet Singh, 32, both residents of Rauke village and employees of PSPCL. Amritpal was a permanent employee, while Sukhpreet worked on a contractual basis.

The incident occurred near the Manuke canal under the jurisdiction of Nihal Singh Wala police station. The duo had gone to the location to operate a local power feeder that had developed a technical snag. To escape the intense heat, they sat under a tree, unaware that a high-tension overhead power line passing over the tree had come into contact with its upper branches.

Current Leaks Through Tree, Instant Death

The heavy current from the high-voltage line leaked into the entire tree, instantly electrocuting both men. The impact was so severe that the tree itself was partially scorched. Both died on the spot. According to police and local sources, the tree was located close to the canal, and the power line was low-lying, which likely contributed to the contact.

Village in Mourning, Recent Marriage Adds to Tragedy

The sudden deaths have left Rauke village in deep mourning. Adding to the tragedy, it was revealed that one of the victims had recently gotten married just a few days prior to the incident. The village Sarpanch, Boota Singh, urged the government to provide appropriate financial compensation to the victim's families.

The incident highlights the dangers of high-tension power lines in rural areas, especially during extreme heat when people seek shade under trees. Authorities have not yet commented on whether any safety violations were involved.
