Allegations of Market Disruption
Speaking to reporters, Ratnam, a representative of the chemists' association, alleged that major corporate players are deliberately disturbing the market balance through aggressive discounting strategies. "These large entities are engaging in deep discounting that makes it impossible for smaller retailers to compete," Ratnam said. He added that such practices not only harm local businesses but also threaten the livelihood of thousands of families dependent on the pharmacy trade.
Impact of Deep Discounting
The chemists argue that deep discounting by big chains and online platforms creates an uneven playing field. "Small chemists cannot afford to offer such steep discounts, and this forces many to operate at a loss or shut down entirely," Ratnam explained. The shutdown is intended to draw the attention of state authorities to the issue and demand regulatory measures to ensure fair competition.

The association has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to intervene and implement policies that prevent anti-competitive practices.
