Aam Aadmi Party Internal Conflict Escalates Publicly Over Raghav Chadha
The internal divisions within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have erupted into the public domain in a dramatic and unprecedented manner. This escalation follows the party's decision to remove Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha from his position as deputy leader in the upper house. Senior party figures have launched direct and pointed criticisms against Chadha, marking a significant rupture in party unity.
Atishi Questions Chadha's Courage and Commitment
Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi took to social media platform X to pose challenging questions to Raghav Chadha. "Are you scared of Modi Ji?" she inquired pointedly. Atishi criticized Chadha for his perceived silence on critical issues affecting ordinary citizens, particularly highlighting the LPG crisis. "Common man facing issue due to LPG, but you didn't say anything on LPG crisis," she stated.
She further elaborated, questioning his reluctance to confront the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Why do you fear the BJP so much? Why are you afraid to ask questions to PM Modi?" Atishi accused Chadha of remaining silent during alleged election rigging in Delhi and democratic challenges in West Bengal. Emphasizing AAP's stance, she declared, "We are soldiers of Arvind Kejriwal and not scared of PM Narendra Modi." She concluded with a stark ultimatum: "Either you decide if you are with constitution or Narendra Modi."
Bhagwant Mann Defends Removal and Labels Chadha as Compromised
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann defended the party's action against Chadha, describing it as routine internal discipline. "This is regular party functioning. It is his call on what statement he wants to make," Mann remarked. He stressed that members who deviate from the party line must face consequences, referencing parliamentary whips.
Mann directly alleged that Chadha is "compromised" and has acted against party directives. He contrasted AAP's focus on substantive issues like GST funds, MSP, and political arrests with what he portrayed as Chadha's trivial concerns. "But if someone raises issues of samosas at airports or pizza delivery time, won’t it raise doubts that he is talking from a different station," Mann quipped, implying Chadha's priorities are misaligned with the party's agenda.
Anurag Dhanda Accuses Chadha of Fear and Inaction
AAP leader Anurag Dhanda joined the criticism, alleging that Chadha has been "scared" for years and hesitant to challenge Prime Minister Modi. Dhanda emphasized the limited speaking time in Parliament, arguing it should be used for national issues rather than minor matters. "In Parliament, the party gets just a little time to speak— in that, we can either struggle to save the nation or push to make samosas cheaper in the airport canteen," he stated.
Dhanda listed specific instances where he claims Chadha failed to support the party, including refusing to sign a proposal against the Chief Election Commissioner and not speaking up during arrests of AAP workers in Gujarat. "For the past few years, you've been scared, Raghav. You hesitate to speak against Modi. You hesitate to speak on the real issues of the country," Dhanda added, reinforcing the theme of cowardice and disloyalty.
BJP Criticizes AAP as Kejriwal-Centric Party
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized the opportunity to criticize AAP, with MP Praveen Khandelwal asserting that the party has devolved into a vehicle for one individual. "This clearly shows that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is no longer a party of the common people, but has become a party of one individual, Arvind Kejriwal," Khandelwal told IANS. He suggested that only those who flatter Kejriwal can remain within AAP, implying a lack of ideological diversity.
This public airing of grievances underscores a deepening crisis within AAP, as key leaders openly challenge a prominent MP. The accusations of fear, compromise, and misaligned priorities highlight significant internal discord that could impact the party's cohesion and public image moving forward.
