AAP MLA Harmeet Pathanmajra Apprehended in Gwalior Over Serious Sexual Assault Allegations

In a significant development, the Punjab Police have successfully arrested Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in connection with a high-profile rape case that has been ongoing since September of last year. The arrest marks a crucial step in a case that has drawn widespread attention due to the political stature of the accused and the grave nature of the allegations.

Details of the Arrest and Legal Proceedings

According to official statements from Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma, Pathanmajra, who serves as the first-time MLA from the Sanour constituency, was nabbed in Gwalior and is currently being transported back to Patiala for further legal action. Upon his arrival, he will be presented before a local court to face the charges levied against him.

The case against Pathanmajra was formally registered on September 1, 2025, at the Civil Lines police station in Patiala. The charges include rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation, stemming from a complaint filed by a woman residing in Zirakpur. The complainant alleged that the MLA misrepresented himself as a divorcee, initiated a relationship with her, and subsequently married her in 2021, despite already being married to another person.

Allegations of Sexual Exploitation and Threats

The woman has accused Pathanmajra of engaging in sexual exploitation, issuing threats, and sending obscene material to her. These serious allegations have cast a shadow over his political career and prompted swift action from law enforcement agencies.

Following his failure to appear in court, Pathanmajra was declared a proclaimed offender, and the Patiala police issued a look-out notice to facilitate his capture. His evasion of the law began on September 2, 2025, when he escaped police custody during an attempted arrest in Karnal, Haryana.

Controversial Escape and Denial of Claims

During the incident in Karnal, police reported that gunshots were fired and stones were thrown by supporters of the legislator when a police team arrived at Dabri village to arrest him at a relative's house. However, Pathanmajra has publicly denied these claims, asserting that he fled because he feared being killed in a fake encounter orchestrated by the authorities.

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by the Punjab Police to uphold justice in cases involving influential figures, highlighting the challenges faced in such high-stakes investigations.
