Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would face a resounding defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, despite amassing all its machinery and resources against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Allegations of Faulty EVMs
Banerjee alleged that faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were dispatched to several polling booths during the first phase of polling, causing inconvenience to voters who had to wait for replacement machines. He claimed that this was part of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the electoral process.
BJP's Campaign Strategy
The BJP has been aggressively campaigning in West Bengal, with top leaders holding multiple rallies and roadshows across the state. The party has focused on issues like corruption, law and order, and alleged misgovernance under the TMC regime. However, Banerjee expressed confidence that the people of Bengal would reject the BJP's divisive politics.
Mamata Banerjee's Popularity
Abhishek Banerjee highlighted the enduring popularity of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that her development initiatives and welfare schemes have won the hearts of the people. He argued that the BJP's negative campaign would not resonate with voters who have experienced the benefits of TMC's governance.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are crucial for both parties, with the TMC aiming to retain power and the BJP seeking to make inroads after its performance in the 2024 general elections. The first phase of polling witnessed a voter turnout of over 75%, indicating high political engagement.
Banerjee's remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the TMC and the BJP, with both parties accusing each other of electoral malpractices. The Election Commission has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure free and fair elections.
