AIADMK-BJP Seat-Sharing Deal Nears Finalization for TN Polls

AIADMK and BJP Approach Final Seat-Sharing Agreement for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, the AIADMK and BJP are moving closer to finalizing a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly polls. According to sources from both parties, the broad contours of the deal have been established, with the BJP expected to settle for 29 seats. Although formal negotiations within the AIADMK-led NDA alliance have not yet commenced, insiders indicate that the framework is largely agreed upon.

Seat Allocation Details and Alliance Dynamics

Under the proposed arrangement, the BJP would be allocated 29 seats, while T T V Dhinakaran's AMMK is likely to receive nine seats, and the PMK would get 18 seats. Smaller allies, such as G K Vasan's Tamil Maanila Congress, B John Pandian's Tamizha Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, and T R Paarivendhar's Indiya Jananayaga Katchi, may each be allotted one or two seats. A senior AIADMK functionary confirmed that his party and the BJP have broadly agreed on this distribution, with formal talks scheduled to take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's NDA rally in Trichy on March 11.

The official negotiations are anticipated to occur around March 14, as per the functionary. Initially, Union minister Piyush Goyal had presented a wish list of 60 seats for the BJP, but the party has since scaled down its demand to 30. To persuade the BJP to accept 29 seats, the AIADMK has promised to allocate them 'favorable' constituencies, enhancing their electoral prospects.

Delays and Strategic Considerations

AIADMK leaders have attributed the delay in seat-sharing talks to the BJP's renewed efforts to reach out to the TVK (Tamil Nadu Vanniyar Katchi). If these efforts prove successful, every partner in the alliance may need to scale down their seat allocations from their current shares. For now, the AIADMK is keen on contesting approximately 170 seats, according to sources within the party camp.

While AMMK had initially sought 13 seats, the AIADMP has proposed limiting them to nine specific constituencies: Sholinghur, Andipatti, Ottapidaram, Nanguneri, Pudukkottai, Harur, Melur, Papanasam, and Musiri. An AIADMK functionary involved in the negotiations noted that the BJP would receive an overall allocation of 38 seats, which includes the nine seats earmarked for AMMK.

Symbol Allocation and Winning Strategies

Discussions are also underway regarding election symbols. The AIADMK is proposing that smaller parties contest on the 'two-leaves' symbol to improve their winning chances, while the BJP is keen on fielding minor parties' candidates on the 'lotus' symbol to increase its tally. However, the final decision on symbol allocation rests with the respective partners, highlighting the collaborative nature of the alliance negotiations.

This seat-sharing deal marks a crucial step in consolidating the NDA's position in Tamil Nadu, as parties work to optimize their electoral strategies ahead of the assembly polls. The outcome of these talks will significantly influence the political landscape in the state, with all eyes on the formal announcements expected in mid-March.
