AIMIM Announces Strategic Alliance with AJUP for Upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi declared on Sunday that the party will contest the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections in partnership with Humayun Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). This alliance aims to bolster AIMIM's presence and advocate for marginalized communities in the state.

Owaisi's Statement on the Alliance and Electoral Strategy

Announcing the tie-up, Owaisi emphasized, "AIMIM has decided to form an alliance with Janata Unnayan Party for the West Bengal elections. We want to strengthen the AIMIM and ensure that our candidates in every corner of the country succeed, raising the voice of the poor and oppressed in the assembly." He highlighted issues such as the cancellation of 5 lakh backward category certificates, predominantly affecting Muslims, and criticized other parties for not supporting representation efforts. Owaisi confirmed a press conference in Kolkata with Humayun Kabir on March 25 to further detail their plans.

Humayun Kabir's Electoral Plans and Candidate Announcements

Humayun Kabir, a former All India Trinamool Congress leader and founder of AJUP, outlined ambitious electoral targets. He stated, "My party, along with the alliance we are in, will contest in 182 seats." Kabir announced 18 candidates so far, including himself from Raninagar and Bhagwangola, and Manisha Pathak Pandey from the 64-Murshidabad seat. He added that AIMIM will contest approximately 8 of these seats as part of the alliance.

West Bengal Assembly Election Schedule and Key Details

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the West Bengal Assembly elections for April 23 and April 29, 2026, with vote counting on May 4. The first phase will cover 152 constituencies, while the second phase includes 142 seats. West Bengal comprises 294 Assembly seats with over 6.45 crore electors, including more than 5.23 lakh first-time voters aged 18 to 19 years.

Political Landscape and Historical Context

The main contest is anticipated between the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory, retaining power, while the Congress and Left Front failed to win any seats. This new alliance could reshape the electoral dynamics in the state.
