In a significant political development, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav held a crucial meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in New Delhi on Tuesday. The meeting, which lasted over 40 minutes, saw Yadav lauding the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader for her steadfast opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) political strategies across the nation.
Solidarity Against BJP's Onslaught
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav emphasized that only Mamata Banerjee possesses the capability to counter what he described as the BJP's "onslaught" in India. He declared, "We will extend full support to Mamata Banerjee in her fight to save democracy." This statement underscores the growing alliance between regional parties ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
Reference to ED Raids and Political Resistance
Yadav specifically referenced the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on I-PAC offices and the residence of its director, Pratik Jain. He took a sharp swipe at the BJP, stating, "Didi (Mamata Banerjee) has defeated the ED; we are certain that she will now defeat the BJP once again." This remark highlights the opposition's narrative of resistance against central agencies, which they allege are being misused for political purposes.
He further alluded to the "pain of losing the pen drive," a pointed reference to electronic devices that Banerjee reportedly retrieved from ED search premises during the raids. This incident has become symbolic of the TMC's confrontational stance against the probe agency.
Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revisions
Akhilesh Yadav raised serious concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging it is a disguised attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and harass citizens. He pointed to Uttar Pradesh, where nearly 2.89 crore voters were removed from draft electoral rolls during a similar exercise.
"The BJP, through SIR, is not trying to enhance its votes; it is trying to slash the votes of opponents," Yadav asserted. He criticized the Election Commission, expressing disappointment that a constitutional body appeared non-neutral in states like Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
Contrast in Political Narratives
Yadav drew a stark contrast between Mamata Banerjee's approach and that of the BJP. "Mamata Banerjee speaks of love and brotherhood, while the BJP speaks of divisiveness," he stated. This framing positions the opposition as champions of secularism and unity against what they perceive as divisive politics.
The meeting was attended by Lok Sabha MP and Yadav's wife, Dimple Yadav, adding a personal dimension to the political solidarity.
