Akhilesh Yadav condemns alleged attack on Mahua Moitra
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday condemned the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fostering a culture of political violence in the country. Yadav asserted that such incidents threaten the democratic fabric of India.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Yadav said, "The attack on Mahua Moitra is condemnable. The BJP's politics of hatred and violence is dangerous for democracy. The party in power is promoting an atmosphere of fear and intimidation." He demanded strict action against the perpetrators and called for an impartial investigation.
Details of the incident
Mahua Moitra, the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar in West Bengal, alleged that she was attacked by a group of unidentified men near her residence in Delhi on Thursday evening. Moitra claimed that the assailants shouted slogans and attempted to assault her, but she managed to escape unhurt. She filed a complaint with the Delhi Police, who have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Moitra, a vocal critic of the BJP-led central government, has been at the center of political controversies, including a recent expulsion from the Lok Sabha over allegations of accepting gifts and cash in exchange for parliamentary questions. She has denied all charges and accused the BJP of targeting her for her outspoken views.
Political reactions and wider implications
The alleged attack has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties, who have condemned the incident and blamed the BJP for creating a hostile political environment. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, "This is a direct attack on democracy. The BJP is using violence to silence dissent." The Left parties also expressed solidarity with Moitra and demanded a thorough probe.
According to political analysts, the incident highlights the growing polarization in Indian politics. "The attack on Moitra is part of a larger pattern of political violence that has been on the rise in recent years," said Dr. S. K. Sharma, a political science professor at Delhi University. "The ruling party's aggressive rhetoric has emboldened fringe elements, leading to such incidents."
BJP denies allegations
The BJP, however, denied any involvement in the incident and accused the opposition of playing politics. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "The BJP believes in democracy and peaceful discourse. The opposition is trying to divert attention from their own internal problems by making baseless allegations." The Delhi Police have assured a fair investigation and said they are examining CCTV footage from the area.
The incident comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the 2024 general elections. Opposition parties have formed an alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), to challenge the BJP's dominance. The alleged attack on Moitra is likely to further strain relations between the ruling party and the opposition.
