In a powerful symbolic response to recent tensions, Muslim residents of Aligarh took to the streets on Tuesday, distributing roses and pens to promote peace and counter narratives of fear. This initiative came days after a right-wing group was accused of distributing swords in parts of Ghaziabad.
A Gesture of Peace in Mixed Localities
The action specifically targeted sensitive, mixed-population areas of the city. Participants went door-to-door, offering roses and pens as emblems of love and education. Nathhu Khan, a local NGO head, explained the motive: "We particularly went to sensitive parts of the city which have residents of all communities... to send a message of communal harmony. There should be no space for hatred and fear in the world's largest democracy."
A young participant elaborated on the symbolism, stating, "The pen represents education and awareness, while the rose stands for love and brotherhood." He emphasized that the goal was to remind society that true strength lies in peace and knowledge, not weapons.
Community Appreciation and Political Backing
The gesture was warmly received by members of other communities. Darshan Singh, a shopkeeper in a prominent city market, drew a direct contrast, noting, "It is true that some are distributing swords, while today people here are giving away roses and pens." Another resident, Ramesh, stressed the importance of coexistence, adding that some were trying to tarnish the image of their liberal religion.
The initiative was organized alongside workers of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Yameen Abbasi, the AIMIM district president for Aligarh, said the move aimed to defuse hatred and reinforce India's pluralistic values. He countered fear-mongering narratives, asserting, "India is a unique nation where people of all faiths have lived together in harmony for many centuries."
Background: The Ghaziabad Sword Incident
This peaceful protest was a direct response to events in Ghaziabad last month. A purported video showing swords being distributed to residents by a right-wing group went viral on social media, triggering public outrage. Following the uproar, Uttar Pradesh Police arrested 10 men in connection with the incident and registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to rioting.
The contrasting events in the two Uttar Pradesh cities highlight the ongoing tensions around communal narratives. The Aligarh initiative stands as a citizen-led effort to reclaim the discourse with messages of unity and shared humanity.
