Amit Shah Chairs Strategic GoM to Address West Asia Crisis Fallout on Critical Supplies

Home Minister Amit Shah is leading an informal Group of Ministers (GoM) tasked with managing the "overall strategic issues" arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This high-level group is specifically focused on mitigating disruptions in the supply of cooking gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which serves as the primary feedstock for urea production in India.

Assessing Fertilizer and Petroleum Gas Supplies

Shah has already convened a meeting with key ministers, including Fertiliser Minister JP Nadda and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, to conduct a thorough assessment of the current status of fertilizer and petroleum gas supplies. This move underscores the government's proactive approach to safeguarding essential commodities amid geopolitical tensions.

Second GoM on Energy Supply Formed

In a parallel development, another informal GoM has been established, headed by Power and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal. This group is dedicated to addressing matters related to energy supply. On Wednesday, the group held its inaugural meeting, where issues concerning "piped gas supply to homes" were discussed extensively.

The meeting saw participation from Food and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy, and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. This focus is particularly significant as the government intensifies its efforts to shift more households from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG) usage, aiming for a more sustainable and secure energy framework.

PM Modi's Directive for Whole-of-Government Approach

The formation of these groups follows a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Saturday. PM Modi emphasized the need for a dedicated group of ministers and secretaries to adopt a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach in tackling the crisis. He also called for the creation of sectoral groups to work in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

Empowered Groups of Secretaries Established

On Tuesday, PM Modi announced the establishment of seven empowered groups of secretaries to handle various issues stemming from the crisis. Several of these groups conducted their first round of meetings on Wednesday. An official involved in the proceedings noted, "There will be greater clarity on the course of action in the next couple of days," indicating that concrete strategies are being formulated to address the multifaceted challenges posed by the West Asia conflict.

The government's multi-layered response, involving both ministerial and secretarial groups, highlights its commitment to ensuring energy security and stabilizing critical supply chains in the face of international disruptions.
