Amritsar witnessed a tragic incident on Sunday when iron shuttering plates collapsed at an under-construction langar hall at Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji, resulting in the death of two women and injuries to seven others.
Details of the Incident
According to Preet Inder Singh, ACP (south), a group of women was reciting prayers beneath the roof when the structure gave way during sewa (voluntary service) for the new hall around noon. The police identified the deceased as Rajrani and Kulwinder Kaur. Among the injured, one remains in critical condition, while another victim is a minor.
Immediate Response
The ACP stated that police personnel, assisted by devotees and sewadars, rushed the victims to the hospital. Legal action will be initiated following a thorough investigation. Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.
Possible Cause
Dhami attributed the collapse to strong winds that caused the shuttering plates to slip from the roof's framework. He noted that construction and service work were being managed to accommodate the heavy Sunday footfall. Dhami visited the injured at Sri Guru Ramdas Ji Hospital, where the SGPC is providing free medical treatment.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities have assured a comprehensive inquiry to prevent such tragedies in the future.
