Left-Wing Parties Stage Protest in Amritsar Over Global Conflict
In a significant demonstration of dissent, workers representing four major left parties gathered at Putlighar Chowk in Amritsar on Sunday. The protestors, from the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP), and CPI(ML) Liberation, voiced strong opposition to the ongoing international tensions.
Symbolic Act of Protest Against US and Israel
During the rally, the participants engaged in a dramatic symbolic act by burning effigies of the presidents of the United States and Israel. This action was a direct protest against the escalating conflict in the Middle East, particularly involving Israel and Iran, which has entered its thirtieth day. The protest highlighted concerns over the war's broader implications, including recent threats from Iran targeting US universities and responses from Kuwait to missile and drone attacks.
Economic Warnings from Farmer Leader Randhawa
Addressing the large gathering, prominent farmer leader Rattan Singh Randhawa issued a stark warning about the international repercussions of the war. He emphasized that the conflict is likely to have a severe impact on global economies, inevitably leading to a further rise in inflation and unemployment worldwide.
Randhawa specifically focused on India's vulnerable position, noting that the country remains heavily dependent on imported oil and gas. He argued that the war is set to push up the prices of these essential commodities, placing severe economic strain on India. Rising fuel prices, Randhawa noted, would further burden common consumers with inflation, exacerbating existing financial hardships.
To illustrate his point, Randhawa highlighted recent government actions, including an increase in the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹60 and commercial cylinders by ₹140. He stated that these hikes significantly add to the public's difficulties, making daily life more challenging for ordinary citizens.
Broad Support from Other Leaders
The protest saw addresses from several other leaders, demonstrating a united front. Among those who spoke were Amarjit Singh Asal, Charanjit Singh Majitha, Sucha Singh Ajnala, Jagtar Singh Karmapura, Lakhbir Singh Nijampur, Vijay Kapoor, Daswinder Kaur, Kanwaljit Kaur, and Balbir Singh Moodhal. Their presence underscored the collective concern over the war's potential to drag in Gulf nations and widen the battlefield beyond the US and Israel, marking a new phase of instability in West Asia.
The gathering served as a platform to express solidarity with global peace efforts and to call attention to the domestic economic threats posed by international conflicts. The left parties urged for diplomatic resolutions to prevent further escalation and mitigate the adverse effects on common people.
