Anbumani Ramadoss, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader and former Union Health Minister, has urged the Central government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to Tamil Nadu from central generating stations. In a statement released on Saturday, he expressed concern over the Centre's decision to sell electricity generated at these plants through a competitive bidding process for price determination.
Concerns Over Competitive Bidding
Anbumani argued that the proposed move would adversely affect Tamil Nadu's power stability and affordability. He emphasized that the state has historically relied on power from central generating stations to meet its energy demands, and any disruption could lead to increased tariffs and supply shortages.
Appeal to the Centre
The PMK leader called upon the Union Power Ministry to reconsider its decision and continue the existing arrangement of supplying power to Tamil Nadu. He stressed that the state's industrial and domestic consumers would face severe consequences if the bidding process is implemented.
Anbumani's statement comes amid growing concerns over energy security in Tamil Nadu, which has been grappling with power deficits in recent years. The Centre's decision to move towards competitive bidding is seen as part of broader reforms in the power sector, but critics argue it could disadvantage states like Tamil Nadu that depend on central allocations.
The issue is expected to be raised in the upcoming parliamentary sessions, with Anbumani urging fellow MPs from Tamil Nadu to unite in opposing the move. The state government has also been requested to take up the matter with the Prime Minister's Office.
